About the Project
Background
The Asia and Pacific Commission on
Agricultural Statistics (APCAS) is a statutory body of FAO, bringing
together senior statistics Officials from 25 FAO member countries of the Asia and Pacific region, who are responsible for the
development of agricultural statistics in their respective countries. They
meet biannually to review recent developments in their agricultural
statistical systems and exchange ideas with experts from FAO and other
organizations on the state of food and agricultural statistics in the
continent. Within the APCAS Framework, the regional project
"Strengthening Regional Data Exchange System on Food and Agricultural
Statistics in Asia and Pacific Countries
(GCP/RAS/184/JPN) was launched.
The development objective of the member
countries of Asia and the Pacific Commission on Agricultural Statistics
(APCAS) is to have a sound statistical system capable of (i) providing data
and information for planning and policy making in the food and agriculture
sector with the aim of raising living standard and nutritional status of
people, especially the rural poor, and (ii) exchanging these data with
other countries to support national, regional and global food security
programmes and policies.
About
the project
The regional project “Strengthening
Regional Data Exchange System on Food and Agricultural Statistics in Asia and Pacific Countries (GCP/RAS/184/JPN)”
was launched in December 2001. It was the follow-up project to
"Improvement of Agricultural Statistics in Asia
and Pacific Countries (GCP/RAS/171/JPN)". With the technical
assistance of FAO and the funding of Japan, sixteen out of the 25
APCAS country members established a unified and integrated Regional Data
Exchange System (RDES) under the project. RDES is a web-based system for
exchanging and accessing national statistical data in electronic format
through the Internet.
The Project has two immediate objectives; 1) Phased implementation of the
Master Plan for the Regional Data Exchange System for Food and Agricultural
Statistics, according to concepts formulated by the previous regional
project with respect to the transfer of data in electronic format among
participating countries in the Region and FAO; and 2) Strengthening of
national capacity to analyze, use and disseminate food and agricultural
statistics in support of national agricultural development policy and
planning, including food security and poverty alleviation.
The project has successfully implemented the Regional Data Exchange System,
serving as a major depository of agricultural statistics data in Asia and the Pacific and a main portal on the subject
providing national agricultural statistics data as well as links to
relevant international and national organizations web sites.
