Indian Agriculture: A Brief Profile

IndiaThe share of agriculture in India’s GDP is around 21 per cent. Indian agriculture, however, continues to support a much larger share of the total population. According to the 55th Round (1999-2000) of the Quinquennial Survey of the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), the proportion of rural population who are self employed in agriculture constitutes 38 per cent while those who are engaged as agricultural labourers constitute 31 per cent. Thus, the proportion of rural population dependent on agriculture is around 70 per cent. According to the 2001 census, the total population of India stood at 1029 million, of which 72 % was rural. This, in turn, implies that around 50 per cent of the total population in the country depends on agriculture. The economic lot of the India’s population therefore depends heavily on agriculture.

The total geographical area of India is 328.73 million hectares. According to the 1995-96 agricultural census, the number of operational holdings increased to 115.58 million from 106.64 million in 1990-01. However, the total area covered by these holdings declined from 165.51 million hectares in 1990-91 to 163.36 million hectares in1995-96. The increase in number of operational holdings coupled with decline in total area led to a decline in the average size of operational holdings by 10.2 % from 1.57 hectares (1.57*2.471=3.88 acres) in 1990-91 to 1.41 hectares  (1.41*2.471=3.48 acres) in 1995-96. The area sown more than once is 48.51 million hectares, and the gross cropped area (GCA) is 189.74 million hectares. Net area sown is 141.23 million hectares. The cropping intensity (% of GCA to net sown area) is 134.3.The net irrigated area is 56.65 million hectares while gross irrigated area is 78.49 million hectares.
