INTRODUCTION OF LAO PDR
Name of Country: Lao People ’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), since the liberation in 1975.
- Total land Area: 236,800 sq.km, 70% of its terrain is mountainous.
- Population: 5.61 million (Male: 2.79 million, Female: 2.81 million) 80% of the populations live in rural areas.
- Population Density: 24.0 pers per sq.km.
- Average Household Size: 5.9 pers per household.
- Sharing Borders with: China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
- Administrative Country: 16 provinces, 1 Capital, 140 districts, 10,000 villages.
- GDP per capita: 680 US Dollars (2007 Agriculture Sector: It makes up highest share of the GDP,
30.9%, followed by Service (36.1%), Industry (26.4%)
and Duty (6.6%)
- Staple Food Crops: Rice is the main staple which is grown by 614,000 households, constituting 77 percent of the total households.
- Lao PDR is classified as one of the least developed country in the World and the Gov. has ambitiously planned to get rid off poverty and to be out of LDCs by 2020.

CENTER FOR STATISTICS AND

Since
July the Statistics Division of the Department of Planning of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has been
reorganized to a Center for Statistics and Information (CSI)
and assigned the collection and compilation of data related to agriculture and livestock from various sources to prepare and distribute a yearly bulletin on agriculture and forestry statistics.
CSI also undertakes the collection of data on prices of agricultural commodities and of inputs for agricultural production. It is also responsible for the cooperation and coordination with other relevant agencies over specific survey activities, for example surveys on key foodstuffs, livestock survey, agricultural acreage and measurement survey, or survey on household production costs and the socio-economic situation of farmers. However, such surveys are conducted on a pilot basis in a few provinces only.
General Status of the System of Food and Agriculture Statistics in Lao PDR
The Lao People’s Democratic Republic has
a decentralized statistical system. Department of Statistics under the
Ministry of Planning and Investment coordinates national statistical activities among governmental organizations and is responsible for basic socio-economic statistics, population and other non-agricultural censuses and for economic calculations such as the national accounts, GDP, etc. In the field of agricultural statistics, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) takes charge of an annual survey and of the publication of agricultural statistics. Proceedings on the National Seminar on the System Food and Agriculture Statistics in Lao PDR, 3-4 August 2000
The first National Seminar on the System of Food and Agriculture Statistics in Lao People’s Democratic Republic was held on 3-4 August 2000 at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) in Vientiane. It was organized within the framework of the FAO project GCP/RAS/171/JPN for the improvement of agricultural statistics in Asia and Pacific countries.
